I’m an attorney in the IT area for HCA Healthcare (a hospital company based out of Nashville, with hospitals across the country). Our group focuses on legal issues in the technology and Intellectual property areas.
How did you become involved in Progress/ What is your involvement with Progress?
When I first moved to Nashville (around 7 years ago), someone mentioned that Progress was looking for a board member. I was interested in getting more involved in the community, and wanted to help a non-profit. I am currently the president of the Board of Directors for Progress.
In your eyes, how does Progress enrich Nashville and make it a better place?
Progress gives a voice to those that don’t get a lot of attention. It also makes people in the community aware of what is going on with a group of people that they may not interact with on a regular basis. For Nashville to be a great community, it has to recognize and embrace all of its citizens.
Why is philanthropy important?
I think it’s good for those that receive the support, and it’s good for the individual that is helping out. Some may not get the support they need without others giving their time, effort, energy, and money. But, again, it benefits those giving, too, as they realize they are working towards something bigger than them.
What would you say to someone who has never heard of Progress?
look it up online. J It’s a great organization and one that focuses on not just providing the necessities (shelter, food, etc), but also on those intangibles that help define an individual (friendship, participation in the community, being able to be a valued member of society.)
Favorite quote or philosophy?
I'm not sure that I really have one, but in the world today, I think, more than ever, we need to provide any support we can to those in need. Income disparity is getting wider and wider, which is having a negative impact on all of us.
